The World Athletics Championships in Berlin (19/08/2009)
This week, Sudan has sent its strongest ever team to compete in the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, which continue until 23 August. This is an exciting time for Sudanese athletics, as the sporting world starts to realise the wealth of talent that Sudan is producing.
At the Beijing Olympics last summer, Sudan won it’s first ever Olympic medal when Ismail Ahmed Ismail won Silver in the Mens 800m final. This is not an isolated example, as can be seen from team-mate Kaki Abubaker, who won the World Indoor 800m title last year, and many others. Their achievements are something for all Sudanese to be proud of.
Over the last 18 months, the British Embassy in Khartoum has supported Sudanese athletics through its “Unity through Sport” programme, donating over £100,000 (around 400,000 SDG) for equipment and training for Sudanese athletes. We’re proud to be doing what we can to support Sudanese athletics as the London 2012 Olympics approach, and we wish them all the best this for the championships in Berlin this week.
